What are Braids?

A braid is a complex structure or pattern formed by interlacing three or more strands of hair. Hair braiding is a traditional “protective style” that takes hours to complete and is generally used to protect natural curly and coily hair textures.

What are the benefits of braids?

  • Helps to retain the moisture of natural hair that is prone to dryness.

  • Prevents hair breakage due to less manipulation of natural hair strands.

  • Promotes natural hair growth.

  • Low maintenance and long-lasting.

  • Fun, cultural, and unique hairstyle

Guide to Getting your Hair Braided:

Braided Dimes focuses strictly on natural hair braiding services (specializing in box braids, braided hairstyles, and faux locs) so it’s important to be prepared with the following:

  • Hair washed/conditioned prior to appointment. We also highly recommend that you do not book an appointment right after having your hair dyed, colored, or any other hair sensitivities.

  • Hair that is ready to be braided - no styles that need to taken out prior to service.

  • Braiding extensions of your choosing. We also provide braiding hair extensions by request. (Please note that your natural hair can be braided without the use of any extensions).

The hair braiding process takes anywhere from approximately 3 to 9 hours or more depending on the type of style. After the style is completed, the ends of the extension braids are then dipped in hot water and sealed with hair mousse. We do not dip the ends of natural hair in hot water.

How to Care for your Braids:

To take care of your braids, please wash and condition them often and moisturize your scalp daily or weekly. We recommend that you do not leave braids in for longer than 8 weeks. Please sleep with a silky/satin hair bonnet or pillowcase to reduce any friction between your natural hair, the braids, and cotton textured materials. When taking out your braids, it is very important for you to be gentle and patient throughout the process with any tangles and knots that may have formed. Please detangle very delicately, it is key! This hair care process reduces friction, breakage, and helps with natural hair length retention/growth.
