Waxing 101 for All Skin Tones by Krista Staggs of Nouveau Wax & Aesthetics
I have been in the waxing business for over 20 years and it is an amazing way to remove hair. With shaving, you will only be hair-free for a couple of days before the prickling hair returns. With waxing, that time frame is extended by weeks! Have you ever noticed that after shaving you can see little dots on your skin? That is because you are cutting the hair off at the surface compared to waxing which removes the hair at its roots so you won't have those little dots. One of the major things people are not aware of is that shaving, rubbing a razor across your skin day after day, causes skin pigmentation (A darkening of the skin). Waxing is done only once every 4 weeks so you will not likely have that problem. One of my favorite things about waxing is that it helps reduce odor. Pulling the hair from the follicle removes more than just hair. It can remove odor-causing bacteria as well!
To get waxed, you will need about 1/4 inch of growth which is about one week's worth of growth. The first time is the hardest since it is usually coarse from shaving and clients tend to be more nervous their first time. Find an Aesthetician that is knowledgeable and comfortable to help your first time go smoothly. I always take the best care of my clients and make them feel comfortable. And the best part is that it is over quickly and when it's over any discomfort is over as well!
If you look at advertising for waxing services, you will notice you don’t see a lot of women and men of color. Waxing is great for darker skin tones because we are more prone to ingrown hairs and hyper-pigmentation. With shaving, every couple of days you will notice the skin, especially the underarms and bikini area, starts to darken. You will also notice more irritation and ingrown hairs. When hair starts growing back from shaving the sharp tips can curl back into the skin causing ingrown hairs. With waxing every four to six weeks, and following a good homecare routine you will minimize it the skin irritation. When waxing you are pulling it from the hair follicle which breaks the hair down so it grows back finer and more sporadic.
An important part of waxing is home care and that is the part I love to help my clients understand so their results are always top-notch. Waxing is good for all skin types. From the fairest to the darkest skin types and from the finest to coarsest of hair, it is a wonderful option! Waxing also removes a layer of dead skin and will leave your skin brighter and softer.
