Esther Lee Leach: Andrea, congratulations on your new book ‘Vibrant Interiors: Living Large At Home’. Tell us more about the publication and how you chose the projects to highlight.
Andrea Schumacher: In this book, we had to make sure 70% of it were projects never published or seen on social media (no small feat!). We chose projects that were complete homes that showed a wide breadth of work. We sandwiched full highlighted projects with break out chapters that gives the reader tips on how to elaborate on their own interrupts, for example how to address what we call “the fifth wall” (your ceiling).
ELL: What attracted you to the interior design world? You have mentioned that your grandmother, artist Elizabeth Monath was a huge influence.Tell us more about her and your start in the industry.
AS: I grew up spending summers in her art studio. She introduced me to drawing and perspective and the art world in general. Her European background and taste in her own home, still resonates with me. Their home was full of items from their travels.
ELL: Can you share three tips with our readers on how create interiors that matches their personalities and lifestyles.
AS: Buy what you love and display it in your home. It doesn’t have to match. Surround yourself in things that tell your personal story. That carved wooden piece you picked up in Bali or the pottery from your last trip. Collect things over time that spark a conversation.
ELL: What are your three favorite places in Denver for discovering unique pieces for homes?
AS: I love Decor Asian on Broadway! It’s many designers that come together with vignettes of items for sale. Modern Nomad is a must shop as well as Home Body and Bloom!
ELL: What destination is at the top of your list for summer travel?
AS: Headed to Italy for their furniture show Salone del Mobile, and as much time in Santa Barbara as time will allow
